From maintenance trims to hard renovation
An annual or twice-yearly trim keeps a hedge dense, tidy and at the height you want. Left for a few seasons, hedges become tall, wide and hollow. We bring them back down with staged reduction cuts that allow the hedge to regrow densely rather than bare.
Large conifer runs, overgrown leylandii, native mixed hedges, beech and hawthorn are all covered, with all arisings chipped and cleared as standard.
Planting new hedges and trees
We also plant: native mixed hedging for boundaries and wildlife, beech or hornbeam for formal lines, and standalone trees chosen to suit West Cumbrian wind and soil. The bare-root planting season runs from November to March, and we can advise at the estimate on what will establish well in your position.
Nesting season
Between February and August we check hedges for active nests before cutting. It is illegal to disturb nesting birds, so significant work on a nested hedge is delayed or planned around them.
Hedge Cutting & Planting questions
How far can you reduce an overgrown hedge?
Most native hedges tolerate hard reduction well, but conifers such as leylandii will not regrow from bare wood, so there is a limit to how far they can come down. Mitchell will advise at the quote how far your hedge can safely be reduced, and whether it needs doing in stages.
Do you take the cuttings away?
Yes. Everything is chipped and cleared as standard, and the ground is raked off before we leave.
Can you cut hedges in summer?
Light trims, usually yes, but between February and August we check for active nests first and work around any we find.
